Cosplay Feature: High Inquisitor Sally Whitemane (World of Warcraft)

I picked this one out specifically to thank you guys for the support. I started this blog in September of 2011, and I am shocked at the outcome so far. I appreciate the messages and feedback I get from everyone so much. Now with a little over 200 followers and almost 10,000 visitors to my website, I wanted to let you know a little bit about myself before I introduce our cosplayer.

Video games have been a huge part of my life, even from when I was just a baby. Before I could even speak a word, I had an original GameBoy slammed into my head. No game had a bigger affect on my life than World of Warcraft. I poured thousands and thousands of hours into this game. Pretty soon it began to take over my life. When I got out of high school, I even dated a beautiful girl that played it with me.. and she was even better than I was!

I have moved on, and no longer spend massive amounts of time in these wonderfully made games. I still remember running my Alliance toons from Southshore to the Scarlet Monastery for a chance to get some gear for my level 30’s way, way back in the day. This series of dungeons will always have a special place in my heart.

High Inquisitor Sally Whitemane is a boss fought at the end of your adventure through the Scarlet Monastery, along side High Commander Mograine. Miyo is a cosplayer from South Korea, and portrays Whitemane flawlessly. Miyo has been a cosplayer for over 12 years and has done hundreds of characters. Her experience shows with her tone and attention to detail.

Cosplay Feature: Juliet Starling (Lollipop Chainsaw)

Lollipop Chainsaw is one of those over the top, provocative video games we’ve all come to love. It’s hard not appreciate a girl kicking ass, while still keeping her hair and makeup in perfect order. I’ll be sure check out this hack-and-slash when it comes out April 24th.

If you’re familiar with cosplay, then most likely you’re familiar with Jessica Nigri. She’s only been around the cosplay scene for a couple of years, but the size of her fan base is staggering. Her first cosplay was in 2009, at the San Diego Comic Con. Jessica is always finding new ways to promote herself and she’s doing very well at that. Currently, she’s in the final round for IGN’s Search for Juliet contest. The winner will be announced March 2nd.

Cosplay Feature: Demon Hunter (Diablo III)

I’m looking forward to the release of Diablo III, and have been for quite some time. Blizzard has been getting some hate lately, but I still think they deserve a ton of credit. I find it remarkable that Blizzard can keep pushing out amazing stuff time and time again, whether it’s a full-blown game or an expansion.

Tamara is a talented 3D character artist who loves cosplay. She’s from Saint Petersburg, Russia, but currently lives with her husband in Irvine, California. Tamara’s online handle is FirstKeeper. Free up some time and roam around her art galleries, you will not be disappointed.

Cosplay Feature: Witch (Left 4 Dead)

The original Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 were both a blast. Don’t try and play it alone with AI allies or you’ll blow your brains out. If you can get some of your closest friends to hop in a game with you, it will be some of the most fun you’ve ever had. There’s no current announced plans for a Left 4 Dead 3, but fans are still very hopeful that Valve will eventually release it.

Julia Kasu is a 20 year old cosplayer from Russia. She loves video games, especially the Elder Scrolls series and other RPGs. Julia has a number of very high quality cosplays, and typically goes by the name Kasuzame Yuu. She also loves frogs.

Cosplay Feature: Grand Master Satele Shan (Star Wars: The Old Republic)

I’ve been playing a little bit of Star Wars TOR lately. A few of my friends are further along than myself, but I am still amazed at how great the story is from the get go. It really makes you feel as if your character is a major part of the Star Wars lore, and I get sucked into it so easily.

Shanao, also known as Nebulaluben, has so many great cosplays under her belt. She lives with her boyfriend in Spain, who shares the same love for cosplay. She has been featured on Kotaku several times, and in magazines as well. There’s no denying that Shanao looks fantastic as Satele Shan!

Anime Monday: Miyamoto Rei (Highschool of the Dead)

Highschool of the Dead is a(n) manga/anime that takes place within a mass zombie apocalypse. To be entirely honest, I’m not big into manga. I did, however, just start watching the anime show on Hulu. It’s pretty graphic, and there’s quite a bit of sexual content in it (I don’t think as much as Gantz). A fairly good show, though.

Chloe, also known as Sushi Monster, is a cosplayer from Orange County, CA. In this cosplay she is Miyamoto Rei. Chloe has a fairly wide variety of cosplays; from TV shows, to video games, to manga, she does it all. And if you live in the Orange County area, she is a hairdresser as well! So you can read manga while she makes you look like Sailor Moon (or Tuxedo Mask for the guys).

Cosplay Feature: Issac Clarke (Dead Space 2)

If someone told you this was Kevin’s first cosplay, would you believe it? Well… it is. Kevin Thong is a French cosplayer living in Paris, France. He designed Isaac Clarke’s suit with his father and their friend. A funny thing I would like to note, is that they actually used some gardening tools to create the suit. That’s one of the coolest things about cosplay: you can use whatever materials you want to make it work. And believe me, it worked. After debuting his suit at the Japan Expo, EA called Kevin for an interview.

As far as Dead Space 3 goes, it is currently being planned out. Dead Space 2 came out at the beginning of this year, so I don’t expect to see much about the third installment until later next year. If it’s anything like the first or second, I will undoubtedly get it.

Cosplay Feature: Catherine (Catherine)

Catherine was a very interesting game. Jumping up giant staircases with sheep, being chased by a demon, while in my boxers is pretty close to my real life. I would like to find some sort of statistic for how many people got each ending.

This cosplay of Catherine is portrayed by Omi Gibson. She lives in Japan. Omi has been doing cosplays for quite a while, and is always posting new ones.

Cosplay Feature: Mad Moxxi (Borderlands)

Borderlands was a blast. The story wasn’t the greatest, but the gameplay was excellent! Plus, Gearbox did their part with releasing some awesome DLC. Mad Moxxi’s Underdome Riot was one of the DLCs released, where you fight in a few different arenas. Hopefully Borderlands 2 follows the same route with their DLC. It should be coming to gamers 2012. If you want more information on Borderlands 2, Game Informer’s cover story has a wealth of information.

This cosplay of Mad Moxxi is done by Enasni Volz, a cosplayer from Texas. She also has some terrific Harley Quinn cosplays on her DeviantArt gallery, and a bunch of cosplays in the works. Enasni may not be as psychotic as Mad Moxxi, but she is crazy about video games and comics!

Cosplay Feature: Princess Zelda (Legend of Zelda)

One of the games I grew up with was Zelda. Every time a new Zelda came out, all 3 of my brothers and myself would go to the store together and pick it up. I specifically remember Ocarina of Time being a huge hit with us because it was 3D. I still appreciate the 2D versions of the game, and play them from time to time on my emulator.

Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is scheduled to release November 20, 2011, in the US. Twilight Princess came out in 2006, and this cosplay is done by Akuriko. She is from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Akuriko has won plenty of awards for your cosplays, and I’m sure her future cosplays won’t be any different.

Cosplay Feature: Tali’Zorah (Mass Effect)

Has Bioware ever made a bad game? I really don’t think so. I remember being 9 years old, sucked into Baulder’s Gate. From there, they just released amazing game after amazing game. I also don’t think I can tell you enough how excited I am for Mass Effect 3! It’s not coming out until March of 2012, but I can’t help but suck as much information out of this game as I can before it comes out.

The cosplayer portraying Tali’Zorah vas Normady is Jennifer Barclay (she is also a great artist!). The photo is taken by Joseph Chi Lin. He does absolutely amazing photography of so many cosplays, it’s remarkable. I urge you to check his work out on Facebook! These two photos were taken out of his DragonCon 2011 gallery.

Halo 4 isn’t expected until the end of 2012, but I think we all need a little reminder why we love the Halo series so much… Cortana. Like a guardian angel watching out for a child, Cortana helps Master Chief out of some pretty sticky situations.

This collection of cosplays are done by Ann Marie. She’s 27 years old, and lives in Jacksonville, FL. She loves playing her Xbox just as much as the next guy, but holds true to her Halo passion. Check out her website for more on Ann.

Cosplay Feature: Jill Valentine (Resident Evil 5)

I loved Resident Evil 5! I got near half the achievements completed. A lot of them were pretty tough, if my memory serves me well. I specifically remember, for one achievement, finding a bunch of rotten eggs to throw at an enemy because I kept missing.

Anyway, enough about me… This amazing cosplay is done by Spif Zaya. She comes from the good ol’ US of A. She’s part of a number of cosplay communities, but seems most active on her Cosplay.com profile. If you’re unfamiliar with the character, it’s Jill Valentine. I bet Chris Redfield and Jill would have made some beautiful looking babies!

My Blog is Expanding

Hey everyone! I’ve just overhauled my entire blog. A brand new theme has been put in place. It’s an extremely customized theme from one I bought. I’ve spent hours tweaking it to be exactly what I need, and I think I got it just about there. Along with my theme, I created a logo to with it (Yes, I do graphic design as well).

DISQUS has been added to my blog! I’m super excited to add Disqus to my posts. I want to be able to interact more with my followers, and even you lurkers! Feel free to comment, mock, question, and/or suggest anything you want.

I’ve also added a social section. I’m also connected with Facebook and Twitter! I’m sure those two will get rolling sooner or later, but please like and follow me on those platforms. The biggest reason for adding these was to give those that aren’t on Tumblr a way to stay updated. Everything posted on Tumblr will also be posted to Facebook and Twitter.

I have a few more things that I will be announcing in the near future, hopefully. For now, stay tuned for more awesome cosplay galleries and interviews!

What was your first ever cosplay?
My first cosplay was Nanao-chan from Bleach. At the time, all of my friends said that I looked like her, but one in special pushed me into the cosplay world. He told me that I wouldn’t regret entering this world. So far, he has proven himself right.

You have two amazing World of Warcraft cosplays. Are you a WoW-player yourself?
I’ll tell you a secret: if I say to you that I’ve played more than 5 hours of WoW in my whole life, I’d be lying. I played Warcraft III for a long time, and I like the Warcraft Universe. I read the comics, play the RPG game, get to know the story, and collect the figures – that’s why I chose that version of Sylvanas. I would like to play WoW, but currently I don’t have time for that.

What are some of your favorite games to play, and what do you like most about them?
I’m a God of War fangirl! I love all that blood spilling on my screen! Hahah. Now, talking seriously, I like the God of War series a lot, as I like Batmam: Arkham Asylum, Uncharted, Demon Souls (waiting anxiously for Dark Souls!), InFamous, and Prince of Persia. I love these kind of action/adventure games. The artwork, the characters’ concept, the involving story, it’s all fantastic! Also in my list of favorites, there are Super Street Fighter 4, the Battlefield series, and the overly cute Little Big Planet.

Do you, as well, think Harley Quinn is one of the sexiest fictional characters?
Totally. And I dare to say that she is one of the most fetishist fictional characters ever created.

Out of all of the cosplays you’ve done, which was your favorite?
No doubt that it’s Drizzt Do’Urden from Dungeon & Dragons: Forgotten Realms. Since I’m a D&D addicted, I became a huge fan of R.A. Salvatore’s books, and consequently, felt in love with this heroic drow (dark elf). So, I gave my best in this cosplay, because I want to hear people saying: “OMG! That’s a flesh n’ blood Drizzt!”

Is there a cosplay that you haven’t done, but really want to do?
There are lots of cosplays that I wish to do, but they are simply impossible to me (such as the prince, from Prince of Persia…). There is a cosplay, in particular, that I’d be very happy if did one day: Angela, the hunter, from Spawn.

Do you make your own costumes?
Every little detail.

What was the longest time you’ve spent on an outfit?
I think it was about 5 months, when I was making Sylvanas. She was the hardest to do.

What was your most expensive cosplay?
It was Drizzt, because his armor is in full leather, and that is very expensive!

What material do you like working with most? What about least?
I like to work with rubber and foam. They are easy to handle and easy to clean. I hate working with styrofoam! Those little pieces of hell break for nothing!

Do you often go to conventions?
Yes. In this year, I’ve already gone to five.

What convention did you like most?
I have a special feeling for a little convention here in the south of Brazil called Anima Heroes. It is much smaller than the other famous events here in my state, but it has some kind of friendly aura that is absent in the big conventions.

What was your most memorable moment at a convention?
I think it was the first time that I spread my Lucifer’s wings. The entire audience was like, “WOOOOOOOOOOOWWWW!”

Have you won any contests for your cosplays?
I won first place with Lucifer (Angel Sanctuary) twice, Drizzt (D&D), Caterina Sforza (Trinity Blood), and Harley Quinn (Arkham City version); second place with Lady Sylvanas (Warcraft); and a third place with Harley Quinn (Asylum version) and Kaname Kuran (Vampire Knight).

What’s your favorite thing about cosplay?
There are two things that I love about it: first is the process of creation itself. I like to go search for references and materials, and enjoy to stay up all night just to get it ready in time. The second is the amount of people I came to know due to the cosplay, and the precious friendships I’ve made.

What are your plans for cosplaying in the future?
I’m working on a bunch of cosplays right now. The next ones you’ll probably see are Yoko from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Prince Nuada from Hellboy 2, Psylocke from X-men, and an alternate version of Morrigan from Darkstalkers. And of course, more WoW to come! Next in line is Tyrande Whisperwind.

Do you have any tips or advice to give to those who may be new to cosplay?
Two bits of advice for the newcomers: cosplay is an activity that demands time and patience. Do not be discouraged if your costume was not perfect the first time. And try to choose a character that you identify yourself with. It’s a thousand times more fun to dress like a character you really like!
